This time of year the farm is producing a great deal of pig food; it’s just a matter of deciding what needs to be eaten first, and, sometimes, of going to get it.

Yesterday we hauled a load of corn and corn stover from the big garden, stacking it against the north wall of the barn to keep it fresh over the course of the week or so it will take the hogs to eat it. Weeds from all the gardens contribute a lot of energy and fiber, and not a little protein (ragweed seed: 47% protein), windfall apples abound, and there is often waste whey or buttermilk.
